Life in the coldest city in the world — Yakutsk, where the temperature in winter drops to -72°C (-97°F) — is a reality bordering on fantasy.

• Imagine: you leave the house, and the air literally crunches, your eyelashes freeze in a minute, and your breath turns into frost.
But people here do not just survive — they live, love, work and find ways to be happy.

Here’s what it really looks like:

🧊 Temperature and climate
Winter lasts 8-9 months.

• January is the most severe: temperatures below -50°C are considered normal.

• The absolute record for cold in the region (Oymyakon): -71.2°C. In Yakutsk it is a little “warmer”, but still deathly cold.

• Oymyakon is known as one of the “Poles of Cold” on the planet.
By a number of parameters, the Oymyakon Valley is the harshest place on Earth where a permanent population lives.

• Even cars are left running for several days on the street — otherwise they simply will not start. Everyone has “autonomous heaters” (engine heaters).

🏘️ Everyday life and housing

• Houses are built on piles – permafrost does not allow for normal foundations. Thermal insulation is at the level of a space station.

• The windows are double, and more often triple. Some have two entrances – one as a “vestibule” so as not to let out heat.
